Easy homemade toothpaste

Toss out your commercial toothpaste and create your very own natural one! It is easy to do and cost very little to make. Commercial tooth paste is full of chemicals to enhance the flavor, color and shelf life. These harsh chemicals also disrupt the natural balance that our delicate oral bacteria are trying to achieve. By making your own homemade toothpaste you will know exactly what you are putting into your body every day. While there are a couple of different recipes for this, my go to one is made with three simple ingredients; coconut oil, baking soda and hydrogen peroxide.

The coconut oil is a key factor because it has very little taste and is full of great minerals such as calcium, potassium, magnesium, phosphorus, manganese and selenium. The coconut oil helps to cleanse your mouth while re-mineralizing your teeth. It also helps to naturally whiten your teeth as well, therefore, a win win! The baking soda also helps to naturally whiten your teeth while also neutralizing the acids that cause dental caries. The hydrogen peroxide may not taste so good but it does provide a very important role in the recipe as well. The hydrogen peroxide creates a chemical reaction in your mouth that helps to loosen the bacteria while cleansing.

Below is the recipe that I use for my homemade toothpaste:

  • 2 Tablespoons of coconut oil

  • 3 Tablespoons of baking soda

  • 1 teaspoon of hydrogen peroxide

You will want to warm up the coconut oil until it melts before combining the rest of the ingredients together. For best results, use a small dark dish for storage as it will help to preserve the hydrogen peroxide.

Happy brushing!
